The 2018 Blavatnik Regional Awards for Young Scientists recognized three outstanding early career scientists across Life Sciences, Chemistry and Physical Sciences and Engineering. In chemistry, we travel to Cornell University to meet Blavatnik Regional Finalist Niankai Fu, PhD, an organic chemist pioneering the use of electroorganic synthesis – the use of electricity to create novel chemical reactions involving molecular catalysis. Next we travel to Stony Brook University to meet Blavatnik Regional Finalist Priyanka Sharma, PhD, a polymer chemist that has made breakthroughs in converting untreated biomass to high-value carboxycelleulose nanofibers for applications in biomedicine and water purification. Finally, we travel to Columbia University to meet 2018 Blavatnik Regional Winner Lu Wei, PhD (now at Caltech) a physical chemist that has developed novel imaging techniques using chemical innovation to simultaneously visualize large numbers of biological species within cells.
